Spurs 3-1 Borussia Dortmund – Mauricio’s reaction

14 Sep

Heung-Min Son gave us an early boost by firing in the first goal inside five minutes against the Bundesliga side and Harry Kane weighed in with two lethal finishes on 15 and 60 minutes to secure a 3-1 victory.

Dortmund impressed in the first half and Andriy Yarmolenko levelled it up at 1-1 on 11 minutes before Kane crucially hit the top corner four minutes later to hand us a 2-1 lead at half-time. We were clinical as the visitors enjoyed 70% possession in the first half but we took control in the second half and carved out numerous chances.

Serge Aurier made his full debut, Fernando Llorente came off the bench for his debut and Juan Foyth was a substitute for the first time. The only blow was seeing Jan Vertonghen sent off for a second yellow card on the night in added time.

“It means more than three points, to build our confidence, trust and to feel at home at Wembley is so important,” said Mauricio. “It’s a massive victory and to start well in the Champions League is so important for us.”

What did you say at half-time?

Mauricio: “It’s true sometimes when you cannot dominate, you must show different strengths. We fought really well and we were so strong. The players made a massive effort against a very good team. Dortmund are a great team and they played really well. I’m so happy with the performance.”

You often talk about us needing to be clinical – we were exactly that in the first half…

Mauricio: “You also need some luck to score and win the game, maybe they dominated more in the first half, it was so open, but we were clinical and in the second half we were in control and didn’t concede too many chances.”

Finally, what did you make of Serge Aurier’s debut?

Mauricio: “He was fantastic. I’m very happy with his performance, he showed real quality.”
